Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire is a county of broad farmland, parkland estates and handsome ironstone villages, with a stronger country-house tradition than its relatively understated reputation might suggest. Its central position and excellent road and rail connections make it particularly practical for buyers who want genuine countryside while retaining access to London.

The north and west of the county contain some of its most attractive landscapes, with villages around the Welland Valley and the borders with Rutland and Leicestershire offering rolling countryside and traditional stone houses. Further south, the areas around Towcester and Brackley benefit from proximity to the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire and the M40 corridor.

Northamptonshire has long associations with hunting, motor racing and equestrian sport, and larger houses with land remain an important part of the market. Oundle is a particularly attractive historic town with a renowned school, while Northampton and regional centres provide the practical amenities required for everyday life.

Fast rail services from Northampton and, depending on location, nearby stations including Milton Keynes make parts of the county realistic for regular London travel. The M1 and A43 also provide unusually good north-south connections.

For country-house buyers prepared to look beyond the most obvious Home Counties, Northamptonshire can offer considerable space, attractive villages and established sporting country while remaining remarkably well connected.
