Kent offers an unusually broad range of country lifestyles, from the wooded High Weald and rolling farmland of the west to orchards, historic villages and an extensive coastline. Its combination of countryside, schools and London connections has long made it attractive to families moving out of the capital.
The western county around Sevenoaks and the villages towards the Weald provides particularly strong connectivity, excellent schools and substantial family houses. Further south, Tunbridge Wells combines elegant architecture, restaurants and shops with immediate access to beautiful countryside.
The Wealden villages around Cranbrook, Goudhurst, Benenden and Tenterden have a stronger rural character, with farms, country houses and some of Kent’s most attractive landscapes. Education is a significant draw here, including established independent schools and Kent’s grammar-school system.
Further east, Canterbury provides history and culture, while the coast ranges from the sailing and food scene around Whitstable to the quieter landscapes of Romney Marsh and the Channel coast.
Rail services, including high-speed connections from parts of the county, make Kent unusually practical given the extent of countryside available.
For country buyers, Kent’s strength is variety. It can offer a highly connected family move, a traditional Wealden country house or a more relaxed coastal lifestyle — often without moving as far from London as the landscape might suggest.
